Painting is one of the ancient arts, which over the centuries has evolved from the cave paintings of the Paleolithic, to the latest currents of the 20th and even the 21st century. This art was born almost with the emergence of humanity. Ancient people, not even fully aware of themselves as humans, felt the need to depict the world around them on the surface. They drew everything they saw: animals, nature, hunting scenes. To paint, they used something similar to paints made from natural materials. These were earth paints, charcoal, black soot. Brushes were made out of animal hair, or they simply painted with their fingers.
New types and genres of painting emerged as a result of the changes. The ancient period was followed by the period of antiquity. There was the desire of painters and artists to reproduce the real life around them, as it is seen by man. The desire for accuracy caused the emergence of the foundations of perspective, the foundations of light and shade constructions of various images and the study of this artists. And they primarily studied how you can depict volumetric space on the plane of the wall, in fresco paintings. Some works of art, such as volumetric space, light and shade, began to be used to decorate rooms, centers of religion and burial.
The next important period in the past of painting is the Middle Ages. At this time painting was more religious in nature, and the worldview began to be reflected in the art. Artists’ work was directed toward iconography and other tunes of religion. The main important points to be emphasized by the artist was not so much an accurate reflection of reality, as the transfer of spirituality, even in the most diverse pictorial works. The paintings of the masters of the time were striking for their expressive contours, colorfulness and colorfulness. Painting of the Middle Ages seems to us flat. All the characters of the artists of the time are on one line. And that’s why many works seem to us somewhat stylized.
The period of the gray Middle Ages was replaced by a brighter period of the Renaissance. The Renaissance period again brought a turning point in the historical development of this art. New moods in society, a new worldview began to dictate the artist: what aspects in the painting to reveal more fully and clearly. Genres of painting such as portrait and landscape would become independent styles. Artists would express the emotions of man and his inner world through new ways of painting. The seventeenth and eighteenth centuries saw even more serious growth in painting. During this period, the Catholic Church loses its importance, and artists in their works increasingly depict true views of people, nature, domestic and everyday life. In this period also formed such genres as – Baroque, Rococo, classicism, mannerism. Romanticism emerges, which was later replaced by a more spectacular style – impressionism.
At the beginning of the twentieth century painting changes dramatically and a newer direction of modern art appears – abstract painting. The idea of this trend is to convey agreement between man and art, to create harmony in combinations of lines and color highlights. It is an art without objectivity. It is not aimed at representing a real image, on the contrary, it represents the artist’s soul and emotions. An important role for this type of art are forms and colors. Its essence is to render previously familiar objects in a new way. Here the artists are given full freedom of their imaginations. This gave an impulse to the origin and development of modern trends such as avant-gardism, underground and abstractionism. From the end of the twentieth century to the present day, painting has been constantly changing. But despite all the new achievements and modern technology, artists still remain faithful to the classic art – oil and watercolor painting, creating their masterpieces with paints and canvases.
